QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU HIRE A PAINTING CONTRACTOR
How many people will be painting my house?
Controlling the quality of a painting project is, in part, dependent, on the job being handled by 1-2 experienced painters who paint the surfaces in a clockwise process using a cross hatch pattern (for interior projects). This way the paint is applied consistently so you’re assured of full coverage and an expert finish. Be cautious of paint contractors that use more than 2-person crews and promise to paint your home quickly.
How many years’ experience does each crew member have?
At Birds Eye Painting each painter has at least 5-years’ experience with our senior painters having 20+ years’ experience. A senior painter is present on every job and is responsible for maintaining the Birds Eye quality level for which we’re known.
Does the quote include exterior pressure washing?
As houses age, their exteriors accumulate dust, mildew and residues, and paint can loosen and flake off. Every exterior Birds Eye Painting project includes a complete exterior pressure wash to ensure all surfaces are clean and free of debris before the painting process begins. Be sure any estimate you receive specifies a preparatory pressure wash for exterior painting.
What painting technique do you use?
For almost all projects we spray the exterior siding and walls with two coats of premium paint. We use a brush and roller for the trim. For interior work we typically use a roller for walls and brush for trim and doors. (ask Jason why).
Does the quote include two coats of premium paint?
Yes, every home we paint has two coats of premium paint. Ask your contractor how many coats they apply as part of the estimating process.
How long will it take to paint the home?
This is an important question to ask, and in our fast-paced world, it would be easy to think that a fast job equals a great job. But, in the world of house painting that’s simply not the case. What does produce a great job is an efficient and methodical process. An average 2-story home with normal wear and tear, should require 5-7 days to complete. This timeframe includes the power wash, typical preparation and priming and two coats of premium paint. If a contractor offers you a completed job in 2-3 days, that may not be the contractor for you—if you want a long-lasting expertly painted home.
Do you offer a warranty?
Birds Eye Painting offers a standard two-year warranty on all exterior paint jobs for peeling and flaking. On interior projects we offer a 30-day warranty for peeling and flaking. We do not charge for this warranty—make sure your contractor doesn’t either.
Do you make repairs to exterior trim and siding as part of your preparation process?
As homes age, wood and other materials can become damaged from weather or accidents. It’s important to select a painter who will repair any damaged areas on the exterior of your home as part of the job and include these costs in your initial estimate. This is another way you can guarantee quality control and save yourself the trouble of having to identify another contractor. When you select Birds Eye Painting, we will make the necessary repairs as part of the preparation stage of the project.
Can you provide 3 references for jobs performed in the last year?
Yes, we provide references for work performed that is similar to the work you require, and all references will be for work performed in the last year.
What is your daily clean up process?
Nothing is worse than working hard all day to come home to a mess left from a contractor. We treat your home like we would ours by cleaning up thoroughly each day. Clean up includes picking up debris and trash. We clean and put away all tools and supplies. We stack ladders and store paint neatly. That way when you arrive home, you are comfortable that work is progressing, and we’re ready to start the following day.
Will you handle purchasing paint that matches my current colors?
Yes, estimate includes matching your current paints to ensure an exact color match. This way you don’t have to take time out of your busy schedule to research the correct color and purchase the paint. We also maintain a record of the color formulas for the life of your warranty.
